This happened a while ago and has since not been a problem but I've always still wondered why it happened. I left my little quaker parrot, who i've had for years, one day for about a couple hours and when I came back there was blood all over his cage and he was missing a toenail and it was bleeding. We stopped the bleeding but for the next couple of days he continued to pluck out his toenails and bleed everywhere. Then, once they grew back in he left them alone other than the normal preening and cleaning as my other parrot does. Does anyone know what may have caused him to rip his little birdy toenails out? He is a well socialized and taken care of bird and he gets lots of attention and love and we are able to leave him alone when we need to to go somewhere without worrying about him. He's never done it since either. Just that one time! it was very scary too! But since he's been fine. If we want to leave the house for the day he's fine too. I just never why a bird would do this?

Hi,

He may not have done it himself he could have gotten it caught on a bit of the cage or a toy, other than that it could have been iritating him and he was picking it and done it to hard they do under estimate the strengh of there own beak, he was picking at it after also because it was iritating him,

If this ever happened again best thing to do is dip his toe in corn-flour to clot the blood, as they dont have much and could end up dying if it doesnt clot.

Glad hes well now thou

I use to run a bird rescue from my house and I have seen birds do the weirdest things with no reason in sight!

Maybe the toenail was infected slightly, maybe if was an accident, maybe the nail got caught on the cage somehow. You will never know for sure unless you saw it happen. The reason he picked at it after it happened is the same reason we pick and scratch at cuts and scraps. It was itchy and probably bothered him a little. Just keep an eye on him! If it really bothers you take him to the vet for a check up! Do you cut the toe nails back when they get to long? This could also be a reason he picked at it!

Hope this helps

For some reason, the nails were causing him pain... either because he'd lodged something in them (difficult) or perhaps an infection (rare).

Regardless - he needed the nails off, so that they could regrow healthily.

Birdie should be fine - my parrot did some weird stuff as well - not sure why, never understood anything he did... loved the little bastard though...

Anyway - unless you want to talk to a veterinarian, and pay the cash, I wouldn't worry about it.

As long as he seems healthy and happy... everything is cool.

I would say that he got caught somewhere on his cage. He freaked and ripped it out. It is basically like what happens to us when we break or rip a finger nail.
