Calorie is a unit of energy describing heat energy... but it is also a unit which describes the energy that food can be turned into. There are two different uses for "calorie". When a furnace burns energy the BTU.. BRITISH THERMAL UNITS are described in calories... The energy that food can create when ingested by you is also described as calories.

A calorie is a unit of energy. Energy makes all kinds of things happen, including all the biochemical reactions inside the cell (metabolism). Heat (warmth) is a byproduct of metabolism.
