R U technologically inept?

U need what some call a "TV Tuner", which is a card that has a TV Cable jack. Buy that and then ask another question here about how to install it.

It's not clear if you are using this on your computer, or as a stand alone TV, so i'll answer both:

If it's stand alone TV, and it's a TV monitor chances are it should also has a TV tuner on it, so technically you can pick up 'free' local broadcasts in high definition with no equipment at all. This would probably only get you 3-4 channels if you are lucky.

Beyond that, you would need to decide if you want satellite or cable for hundreds of channels. Both have their own advantages/disadvantages, call your local cable and satellite providers to decide which one has the channels/packages you want.

Depending on which provider you go with, usually they will have deals or ways to rent any equipment you need to receive their signal so you can watch them.

I would highly recommend getting a receiver with DVR ( video recording ) capabilities so you can record/pause/playback /ffwd through commercials with your your TV programs. Of course the more features you get, the more it costs per month, but its usually pretty cost efficient. The time savings alone for fast forwarding through commercials and watching shows when you want to is worth every penny.

If it's your computer monitor, and you want to get TV on your computer then you will still need to make the choice above between sattelite or cablevision. Once you do that, you also need a TV Tuner card for your PC, and of course a cable ( should be supplied with the TV ) to hook your computer up to the monitor. The Tuner card just plugs into any number of inputs from your cablevision/sattelite source ( the cable people can help with this ).

Hopet that helps!

If this a TV or a monitor?

For a TV, you need an antenna, cable or satelite dish. If the TV has a digital decoder then you can purchase a UHF antenna to receive HD TV programming over the air.

If it is just a monitor then you need to get a TV tuner. Go back to the store and buy one.

Hopefully there's a PCI slot vacant in your computer. If so, you will want to buy a TV card, sometimes called a PVR, and install it in your pc along with the software that comes with it. At the below link you can read about one, and what it does. Happy Viewing.

if it doenst have a hdtv tuner then you need one of those (atsc tunner).
And you will need a UHF antenna pointing towards the brodcast towwer, connected to the tuner with RF cable.
Ask them at radio shack, they will be able to better asses what you need relative to what you have
