The state I am living in is trying to collect taxes claiming that I lived here in 2001.

From your employer.

The IRS would have their copies but I do not think that it shows state withholding.

Did you live in that state in 2001?

If not, do you have a copy of the state tax return you filed in 2001?
If so, just send a copy to the state you now live in as proof of your residency.

Don't you have copies of them when you filed your 2001 taxes? If you don't, then you are very sloppy in keeping copies of important documents because you should always have copies of your 1040 and state Tax returns for situations like the one you describe.
