I heard a non-chemical treatment works its that you put mayonaise on every inch of your head (and hair) and it smothers the lice and you have to have on your head for and hour wrapped in plastic. And you would have greasy hair for 2-3 days if you washed it everyday. Does it work??

My daughter has long thick hair and it was almost impossible to get rid of the lice.
What finally worked was washing her EVERY DAY with the lice shampoo for about seven days--we used the Equate kind that you get from Wal-Mart.
They mayonnaise stunk really bad and didn't work---that stuff doesn't kill the nits/eggs. It only kills the lice that are hatched.

Manual combing
Combing, or nitpicking is a particularly effective method for removal of lice without the use of any medicine, special shampoos, or meticulous visual inspections.
A special comb can remove nymphs and adult lice, but not their eggs. A black (some have suggested white or metal works well) comb will contrast with the vermin to make inspecting and cleaning the comb easier. Many combs become ineffective after one use, notably the plastic ones. The teeth of the comb must stay close enough together to pull the eggs or the live lice off each individual hair strand.

The combing treatment requires a measure of patience, though not so much as the chemical treatments which generally require at least three weeks of treatment. Combing, by contrast, takes approximately 10 days.

Three times per day (preferably, right after you wake up, noon and before you sleep), you 'scan' the hair with the comb completely, three times, and at each pass of the comb, carefully inspect the comb, then remove possible adult lice and nymphs (dipping comb in rubbing alcohol, hot water, or by scrubbing out the comb with an toothbrush or nail brush), then continue combing. It may help to wet the hair slightly before combing. Although be careful if blowing the comb, lice may drop onto the floor and crawl around. [2]

This technique works because the comb removes the nymphs and the adult lice, but not the nits. Thus, by combing your hair 3 times per day, you make sure you have removed all the adult lice you have on your hair, PLUS all the nymphs which were going to grow up into adults, thus you only have nits (lice eggs) on your head. The next day, some of the nits will have transformed into nymphs, and thus you remove all of the newly-transformed nymphs, before they get the chance to become adults and thus lay eggs (because only adults can lay eggs). Therefore, since the nits take 7-9 days to become nymphs, and you remove every nymph from your head every day, you just wait until the last-laid nit becomes a nymph (that's the ninth day after you have started this treatment), and remove it. Continue for one more day for good measure. Regularly combing (i.e. once a week) will help to stop re-infestations. Combing all family members (or people in close, frequent contact) within a similar time frame (i.e. everyone combed out today) is important as lice is transferred back and forth between hosts.

New Treatment?

A new treatment released recently in the UK called Hedrin® (www.thorntonross.com/hedrin), is now available from pharmacies. Hedrin contains Dimeticone, which is a silicone based compund. Hedrin® coats the headlice and prevents them from feeding. As it contains no pesticides it is suitable for people with sensitive skin or asthma. Studies are underway to scientifically prove that it also compromises the eggs.

NOTE:
If your doctor recommends using a lidane-based shampoo or lotion for your child's lice or scabies, ask about the risk of long-term potential side effects as well as alternative medication.

Why on earth would you even try that? Just go to the store and get the lice killer in the pharmacy section. May MIGHT smother the adult lice, but it will NOT kill the eggs. So just get the stuff that really works and use it as directed. Also, wash all bedding in Lysol disinfectant liquid. It's safe for laundry. If you don't do all of these things, then you will just have this continually. Everyone in your house should be treated as well or you all will just pass it back and forth and never get rid of it.

The only thing that will kill lice is lice shampoo. You can't get rid of it by just using the shampoo either. You must wash all of your bedding and pillows and things like that, in the hottest water possible, (bleaching if you can) and dry them on the hottest setting. What can't be washed should be stored in an air-tight plastic bag for several days. Your mattress, couch, carpets, and drapes need to be sprayed with a lice killing spray. You can buy the whole kit at Wal-Mart or any drug store. Rid is the best.

I don't know about the mayo thing. But to keep lice out you can add a little hair spray or mousse to the hair also VO 55 has a hair-dress that will help to keep lice out. If you have lice please buy an over the counter treatment and follow directions if that doesn't work contact your doctor.

It kills the lice that are alive but not the eggs. When the eggs hatch you will just have them again. Get some ridX from the pharmacy and follow the package instructions. Be sure to wash all of your laundry and bed sheets/comforters/pillows etc as the eggs may be on those as well. You can put comforters and pillows in a plastic bag for a week as well if your washer and dryer will not accomidate them.

i dont know about mayonaise, but vegie oil works. you cover your whole head in vegie oil, and pay special attention to the scalp. Then you wear a shower cap and go to bed, this suffocates the lice and when you wake up in the morning take a shower and use a nit pick to comb them out. your hair won't be greasy.

there are also the chemicals which are more effective

I'm a nurse. No dear go to your local drug store and get something OTC. It will work just as good as a prescription from a doctor. Ask the pharmacist for a generic form it will also work just as good. You can also delice yourself but you will still need to use a shampoo that will kill any left over or that would be developing. Take care

I definitely wouldn't go for the mayo, RidX sounds like better idea and when you are washing all your things remember to use hot water.

Mayo is too messy and it's such a hassle and I honestly don't think that would work. Might as well use the medicine quick and painless. Good Luck!
