I have one male and one female. I can't really tell you which one is better to have, but I can describe them a little.

The male is more friendly and less prone to mood swings then the female is. When the female is in her hormonal stage, she can become very territorial and very mean, to both humans and her playmate. The male never has these mood swings.

The female is more outgoing than the male and is less likely to get scared by something. It was much easier to finger train her than the male, and she is a better flyer than he is (although this could just be coincidence).

The female is far more vocal than the male. She screams randomly and does more chatter. The male only chirps when he hears another bird (like on tv).

In summary, hens (females) tend to be more outgoing with a bigger personality, while the males are more constant and reserved.

If you only keep one I'd get a male because a male will learn to talk like a big parrot only his voice will sound like a tiny little speaker, so it may be hard for you to know what he is saying at first. But once you figure out what he is saying you will really enjoy him. You probly wont get one tamed at all and then you will be frustrated with him not allowing you to play with him. Dont make his being tame so important to you that you fall out of love with who you picked out. Sit back and watch him, see what his personality is like and move slowly around him so he has no reasons to fear you. I can tell you it is very hard to tame a wild parakeet, so if you want a tamed bird you need to wait to find one, otherwise who ever you bring home will be wild. But it doesnt mean he wont bond with you or talk, it just means he doesnt want to be handled.

if you are female get a male...if you want one that is not as noisy..get a girl. best advice stick your hand in there or get up close to the glass which ever one comes to you.... take it. If it shows an interest in you... go with it, they sometimes like to pick their owners...they can tell who they need to be afraid of and who is safe!
