I feel quite adequate in answering this question as I have had IBS for probably 30 years. The good news is as you get older the problem of having it decreases...this has to do with eliminating those things in your life that causing you stress. In that statement, I have given you the reason for IBS....stress. As far as controlling it, watch your diet. If something you eat that seems to begin the cramping and diarrhea, don't eat that again. Becoming regular is of prime importance. You do need fibre in your diet. And there are many products on the market that can even be added to your food...stirred in...and you'll never know it.

I am familiar with canceling plans because I have had an attack...worse yet is being out to dinner and having an attack. I sympathize with you, but it can be controlled also with intestinal sedatives....as your doctor about them too. Best medcine is to learn how to relax...I know it's hard. I lessened my attacks by quitting the job I had...where I had an attack EVERY single day.
I am pretty much symptom free at this time. Good luck.

Now that you are diagnosed with IBS you can feel a little better knowing that it is not serious but very annoying .It can make a person socially isolated. There is no cure for IBS and Doctors are not sure what causes it at this time. However it's questionable that stress may play a big role in this syndrome. There is no answer as to what can make you feel better and I agree it makes for a poor quality of life, although I can tell you that Ativan can decrease the symptoms and spasms that occur . I suggest you ask your doctor if he could give you a script for Ativan to decrease your symptoms and to help you live a normal life. You don't want to take it everyday because they are addictive however on your "bad days" it is certainly worth it. Good Luck and stay calm, I hope they find a cure for it someday soon.

If you believe it may be due to a dietary cause try an elimination diet like the ones described in "Back to Eden - Klauss". The diet is designed to help you pinpoint irritants and eliminate them from your diet. By not eating the offending foods you may reduce if not completely eliminate this problem. You may also want to talk to a Naturopath: http://www.naturopathic.org/ - for other alternative therapies as drugs have little effect on this disease. Good Luck!

irritable bowel syndrome it is so irritating to say the least
and why didn't your Doctor give you the proper meds to take care of this problem?
call them up NOW, and ask them for something to be sent to your pharmacy, and maybe you may need to see another doctor for a second opinion ad have them give you the proper meds
this is what I would do TODAY !

good luck

They're starting to recommend that people with IBS, or IBS-like symptoms be tested for celiac disease, which is an intolerance to gluten (wheat, rye, barley and oats). A lot of people with celiac were misdiagnosed as having IBS for years. (18 years for me). It takes an average of 11 years for a person with celiac to be diagnosed.

Here's a webpage by the National Institutes of Health on celiac -
http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/celiac/

And another from the Mayo Clinic -

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/celiac-disease/DS00319

If that starts sounding familiar here are a couple of message boards for people with celiac and other gluten intolerances.

You can also be intolerant to other common foods and get the symptoms you are describing. Soy, corn, eggs, yeast, dairy, etc. You may want to think about keeping a food/symptoms journal and see if you can identify the culprit(s).

I hope you feel better soon.

It's due to the way your digestive system works but can be exascerbated by foods etc. Avoid caffeine and raw veggies/fruits. Getting more fiber in your diet helps as does taking a multivitamin.

Your doctor should have given you all this information to begin with. Call back and get some answers. With me, eating to much made it worse. Eating to many fibery foods or roughage made it worse. Eating gassy foods makes it worse. And sometimes it doesn't matter what you eat, it gets worse. Your emotionally state makes a huge difference. Being really nervous or upset makes it worse. When I went to see my doctor he told me it is brought on by stress. Type in IBIS on the search page and you'll get some good research. Good Luck.

Diet plays a big role in IBS so does everyday stress. Some people call it a nervous stomach. I highly recommend Acupuncture! but you need to find someone really good, someone with lots of experience.

Good Luck,
