Is there a way to take previously recorded 8mm home movies and transfer them to digital format. I've got an old 8mm camera and cannot afford to upgrade right now. But I would like to transfer the tapes to my MAC and then burn DVD's for family to view.

I'm planning to do this myself so I've gotten at least a little familiar with some of the options.

First, some digital camcorders have a "analog to digital conversion" capability, but unfortunately many companies seem to be phasing them out to save bucks.

Otherwise, stand-alone "DVD burners" have the capability to receive data from 8mm camcorders and burn it to DVD's. Some also have the ability to do the same for SD digital photo cards, VHS tapes, and other analog input sources (including just audio from "record players," etc.).

Not sure what if any difference having a Mac would make, but just be sure to indicate that if you shop. (And be sure to be clear about which units will work with which connectors, because there are a lot that don't work for particular inputs or outputs)

I'm assuming that companies that provide the transfer service use one of these types of things (but will be more expensive than if you can own or borrow your own equipment).

You can buy an adaptor (Dazzle is one) that connects to your USB port and lets you plug in your camcorder. You can then transfer the movies into something like Studio 10 and burn them to a DVD. Only problem is that the transfer process takes place in real time. If it is a 2 hour home move, it will take a little over 2 hours to do the transfer.

there are a number of locations that will do this for you. try a google search for " 8mm to digital". the price is not bad, it is priced on a linear foot basis. i think most 8mm have about 50 feet of film.
the price that i remember was about .12 per foot......
i have over 100 rolls that i am going to get done...
