I am ver y shy and my family is very critical about this and it makes me feel bad like something is wrong with me. Is there really something wrong with being shy? Once I get to know someone I open up but is there something wrong with someone being shy?

There's nothing wrong with being shy. Sometimes the problem is other people do not know how to handle a shy person. That makes them feel uncomfortable. Or they might think you are stuck up/snobby. I am shy too. So I try to smile a lot to let people know that I can be friendly :)

Nothing is wrong with being shy, but it can hold you back from getting to know people. Ever been to a party or large gathering where you didn't know a lot of people? Who did you remember? Usually, it's the people who are friendly and make an effort to talk to you, rather than the ones who sit quietly in the background and don't say a word.

I was very shy myself when I was younger, and often felt discouraged in social settings. But, shyness can be overcome. If you practice starting and sustaining conversations, you'll find it becomes easier and easier. It's like practicing any skill, really. Though I'm still on the shy side, it's no longer evident to others.

As for your family, you should tell them that their criticism is bothering you. They might think that they're being helpful and not realize that they're making you feel bad. Tell them that you'll make more of an effort, but that they need to leave you alone.

Im going to answer truthfully because i wouldve wanted the truth before. I was very shy, just thought it was part of my nature. Turns out i was just messed up, now im VERY outgoing. But there is a difference of shy and being an introvert. Being an introvert is ok because that's who u are. Being shy is not, because usually that means ur insecure and maybe a little emotionally detached. Hope this answers ur question.

No! There's nothing wrong with it. You have the right to talk to who you want to talk to, and it's smart to take a while to open up. You may have to fake being not shy when you are at work or school, but you have the right to be who you are.

There is nothing wrong with being shy! Just because you aren't as outgoing as others doesn't mean there is something wrong with you--you just have a different personality than other members of your family.

Nope. there are just people who can't understand why someone would be shy in certain situations. even though people can choose to be less shy in certain situations it is naturally stronger in some more than others. I guess your parents think not being shy leads to living a "better" life or something...............

i have been shy most of my life. i have been told that when someone is shy and doesn't talk with people, it gives them the impression that you are haughty and just don't care to know people. are you involved in a church or something like that? get involved with some of the things going on with whatever you are interested in and start saying "hello, how are you?" people love to be recognized and spoken to. take it from someone who knows, it's not as hard as you may think.
