Lets say that i download 1,000 songs in 1 year but out of the 1,00 songs i download i delete 700, where do those songs go? Do they actually get deleted off the computer or do they just get "deleted" but are still stored into the computer and that just builds up and makes the computer slower? Im also talking about videos, programs and etc.

Deleting files is a two-step process on modern computers: you mark the files for deletion, then you "empty the trash."

What really happens at each stage is that when you drag a file to the trash, that file gets marked by the operating system to be deleted but it stays on your hard drive -- it's just that you don't see it when you open a Windows Explorer window or look on your desktop. But the file is still there, taking up disk space.

When you "empty" the trash, the operating system says it's okay to re-use the disk space previously used by that file. The next time you download a file, the deleted file's space on the disk may be written over or it may not.

Something that makes the computer slower, though, is that downloading all these files can make the disk drive "fragmented." That's when files are stored in pieces scattered all over your hard drive -- a problem for media files in particular. (Why? Because if your computer has to search too long to find the next part of a song or a movie, you'll see or hear it as choppy playback.)

You should "defragment" your hard drive frequently. What this does is re-organize all your files and update the operating system's records about where they're stored. This makes it easier for the computer to find files more quickly, which makes it run faster.

To defragment your computer, click Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools, then choose Disk Defragmenter. It can take a bit of time (up to an hour on a system with a lot of files) to defragment, and it will slow up other things on your computer while it's going on, so it might be a good thing to do when you're about to take a break. But when it's done, your computer should run more quickly.

It depends. Old files and such may go into the recycle bin on your desktop. If it is not there, it has been deleted permanently and you can only get it back with specialized software and perhaps specialized technical assistance. Anything else deleted, if the application does not provide a recycle bin, it is gone.

"To the big bit-bucket in the sky..."

Sorry, I couldn't help myself.

Seriously, when you delete something from your hard drive, the os only renders the space that it occupied 'available' to store more data, music, whatever. If it isn't written over, there are programs that can reestablish it. For the sake of speed, it depends on how your drive is configured; FAT, FAT32, or NTFS, you can dump your stuff and do a 'fragmentation' which helps performance. It will be especially noticeable if you do a lot of adding and removing programs. It allows programs to be stored in a contiguous fashion for quick loading. It's kind of like throwing all the clothes, shoes, boots, and coats in the closet. First get rid of the stuff you'll never wear (come on, it's in there) and then systematically hanging or folding things and putting them together. Lots more space and things are found quickly and easily! :-)

If you delete things from say "My Music"(folder) they usually go to "Recycle Bin"(another folder). I could be wrong. But what I would suggest is every couple of days or so empty your recycle bin. Recycle bin is usually located on your desktop you can right click it and a shortcut menu shows up n there will be an option saying "Empty Recycle Bin"(click that) and when a dialog box shows up saying "Empty Recyle Bin?" or "Do you want to delete these ____(#) items?" click "Yes"

They go into the Recycle bin. If you don't empty it, they will stay there and you'll eventually run out of disk space.

Even if you empty it, they are still not completely gone and can be recovered. So, if you're illegally downloading songs, you can still be arrested even after deleting them.
