We use a "weight tape." It has a calibrated scale of weights on one side. You wrap it around the horse right behind the withers and read the weight where the tape meets, and it gives you a surprisingly accurate weight. Most vet schools and equine hospitals actually have walk on livestock scales, but for those who don't have access to them, weight tapes work very well for horses up to 1300 lbs or so. You can get them at most tack stores or from catalogs, or sometimes they are given as a free promotion if you buy 12 tubes of dewormer or whatever. Good question!!

Most people do not have easy access to a large livestock scale so most use a weight tape.
It has weight incriments on it and you just wrap it around your horses heart girth area and read where the tape meets. You get a weight.
They aren ot to far off and if you use it regulary they work pretty well.

You can use a weight tape or try this:
There are scales at local sand & gravel pits, asphalt plants, landfills or anywhere a tractor-trailer or dump truck has to load up. Find a local scale, hook up your horse trailer to your truck, and go have that combination weighed (truck & trailer). Then, load up your horse, and have that combination weighed (truck, trailer & horse).
Subtract (truck & trailer) from (truck, trailer & horse) and you have the weight of your horse!

you can get a height/weight tape from your local feed store or your vet. i agree with PonyRider on letting your horse sniff the tape before you use it, it could prevent a dangerous situation, if you have never used one before ask another person to help you with it.
