when did dvd players first come out?

me and my bro were sitting here this morning and he asked me this question...lol...i tried looking it up on-line but it kept giving me stuff about the new blueray.
If anyone knows the answer i would like to know!

Sony marketed the first consumer DVD player to the US market in march of 1997. Such players were available in Japn the previous year.
