I don't think a punishment of death is an effective way to prevent those crimes. A person who is able to kill (outside of self-defense and other situations that lead to accidental death) is lacking respect/value on life. How could the threat of loosing their own life be a deterrent if they place no value on life?
More or less the death penalty protects the rest of society from those that do kill.

Not while the punishment does not seem so real. No longer are you thrown into a dark hole, and dragged out for hanging, without delay. Now, you have rights. You can work. You can go to school. You have 3 meals a day, a bed, a crowd to hang out with. Prison is no longer sealed off from the world. You can get drugs, money, alcohol.
If we went back to a strict ...strict... form of punishment. It might cause a person to think before the crime. But now, prison isn't far from a vacation.

The problem is that many murderers in recent years (in the UK) have been found to have been wrongly convicted. Over a dozen innocent people would have been executed so that is a strong argument against the death penalty.

it has been proven time and again that the death sentence is not an effective deterrent for the crime of murder.
I would agree.
Therefore it would not be effective to control the crime.

no, countries without the death penalty have the same murder rate as countries with the death penalty, the death penalty does not work as a deterent.

well if rapists knew that they would die or get severely punished if they got caught, maybe they would finally use their brain and stop. rapists right now are let go too easily.
