First off, don't panic. Take a deep breath. It isn't as bad as you think. When you go to file for 2006, file for 2005 as well. Whoever is preparing your taxes can easily take care of this for you, as well as charge you accordingly. If you want, you can do it yourself, if you have all of the paperwork. You will simply have to file married but separate. No big deal. Just call one of the big name tax preparation companies and they will tell you the same. As long as you have your paperwork, it is no prob.

Ouch. Well, all you can do now is either get with her and file a joint return (late), or file your own as married filing separately. You can't file as head of household, as another responder suggested, since you were still married. Filing late will cost you some money, but you won't be in major trouble.
You'd probably be best off to see an accountant for this. Sounds like that's the direction you're already going. Doing something as soon as possible is a good idea, but there's nothing magic about doing it before the end of the year.
Good luck.

If she never asked you to sign your return by the 15th of last April it should have been a dead giveaway to you as both parties have to sign a return. Did your wife work? Did she have income? Do you have children? You really should visit a tax preparer or the IRS VITA site and get your 05 return filled out and filed; even if you owe money. You can work out a payment plan with the IRS; they are willing to work with you if you meet them halfway.

A tax specialist is what you need, not answers in this forum. We can't see the figures or the paper work. Interview more than one before settling on the one who can help you best.
And, in the future, make sure you know what's going on.

well, since she did not file at all, file separate for yourself. no matter what she does. just tell her you doing that so she doesn't try to do it eventually. you may be surprised that you may not owe as much without her. you are head of house hold. try it .
