almost. was in bed sick with a stomach virus for 3 days, couldn't keep anything in or down if you know what i mean. i started seeing spots and the room was spinning. i called my mom who lived about 20 mins from me at the time and she came and took me to the ER. I got IV fluids and was okay after that.

Hello:
To answer your question, I personally have not passed out from dehydration but I have had patients of mine faint from dehydration.
This usually happens with gastrointestinal infections, ie. food poisoning, gastroenteritis (stomach flu), Montezuma's revenge (traveler's diarrhea). Although it can also happen in elderly patients who have had strokes and dont have the neural connection in their central nervous system to tell their body that they are thirsty, therefore they dont drink and become massively dehydrated.
The reason you faint with severe dehydration is that your arteries and veins are not full which causes your heart to start beating faster in an attempt to pump more oxygenated blood to the brain and other tissues. So you can faint either from lack of fresh oxygenated arterial blood to the brain or from a heart that is beating so fast that it doesnt have time to fill back with blood during the resting part of the beat cycle causing less blood to be pumped out of the heart and up into the brain.
It is very easily remedied. If someone passes out from dehydration, then chances are they are severely dehydrated and will require rapid intravenous fluid replacement. Once the body is rehydrated then the fainting will stop.
I hope this helped answer your question.
To you health!
Warren Shaffer, M.D.
