It is not a good idea to file from your check stub. The W-2 is more accurate as far as deductions. Looking at you check stub sometimes can be very confusing. The purpose of the W-2 is to help you fill out the 1040 correctly.

I worked in payroll for years, and we sometimes had to make corrections to the earning. Salary adjustments sometimes were not pickup until we were processing our final reports for the IRS.

If you are getting a large refund and you are in a rush, you can always file a 1040X after the fact. Your best bet is not to file a corrections until after you have received the refund check. If you file and two weeks later you receive the corrected W-2 from your payroll department, hold it until you receive your refund check,

You can use your paycheck stub if you have not received a W2. You would then use it to file a substitute W2. However, since W2's do not have to be mailed until January 31st, the IRS will not accept substitute W2's by e-file until the middle of February. And that is after you have made every attempt possible to obtain the W2 from your employer.

last year my husband and i were in a bind. my checks from my job at the time were all hand written, and so were the stubs. we walked into a Jackson and Hewitt, the lady totaled all of the stubs, entered all of our information in the computer, gave us a credit card, and in one hour, the money was on the card to use. the whole amount that is owed to you will not be on the card that day, how ever, they loan you about 2600 dollars, and in 4 days or so, you 'll get the difference. so you can do it electronically there.

You can file from your check stub, but you may now know which deductions affect taxable income. Wait for your W-2 to make sure you report your wages correctly.

Yes, you can, however if you expect a tax refund you will need W-2s attached to the return to prove that income taxes have been withheld from your pay.
