I asked a question the other day about a novel I'd read, commenting that it had some interesting ideas on God. One response was "I don't like novels, and I get my God from the Bible".
So...assuming you believe in the Bible, is it OK to get ideas or thoughts on God from different sources--even if you don't necessarily *believe* in them?
Would knowing the religion of the writer make a difference? If it would, how would it impact your thoughts? If you knew the writer didn't believe the Bible but still made solid points that agreed with the Bible, would that be any different?
And while we're at it...if you're of a different faith, flip these questions around to your viewpoint and answer accordingly.
Please no ad hominem attacks or assumptions on my belief. Just a question. If you're opposed to it, please move along.

I am a hindu I don't believe god and I don't need either.
But, some people,in spite of having relatives, friends, neighbours etc..,or due to absence of them sometimes feel lonely and depressed. That is where belief in something or some one(god) helps him overcome that feeling. To that extent the BELIEF in god or something else is helpful.

I get ideas everywhere I look. That doesn't make them sound. The Bible is our guidebook to life as a believer. You must take into account that books and movies are made by mankind to make a profit. They may have a good general idea but they twist it slightly so that audiences will buy it. Think of a significant event in your life. If someone wanted to make a movie of it, they would BASE it on the truth but add to it to make it more sellable. Get it? Use your Bible to sort through the ideas you are reading about. And don't forget, to use the Bible, you actually have to open it and read it. I have found that I will take away from my Bible reading to see a movie or read a book that "I" think is good. We are to stop doing the "I" thing and do what God wants. The only way to do that is to pray and read the Bible. I hope this is what you were looking for in your answers. God Bless You

Its good, you are a good student. I think you should read from different sources as long as they don't confuse you. I think if you read from too many sources at once it can become a big mess so I would say it is best to have a basic thing you go back to and then branch out slowly and gradually. I believe that no idea can hurt you as long as you don't get converted by it. I am aware that many people feel very differently from this and I will say that anybody who gives me a thumbs down has the other thumb up their asz, so to all the goons on here, give me a thumbs down if you have the other one up your butt.

The idea of God came about as a means by which people could control other people!
If someone tries to say do this because I say so. The typical responce would be who are you and why should I listen to your crazy ideas! However if the same thing is said but the person asserts that it is from a God Wow all the sudden people blindly accept it!
God was created as a means of control!
There is no God in reality!
God is only a fantasy creation of humans!

Star Wars has some interesting spirituality. The Jedi knights was a mystical priesthood that could have been modeled after the Catholic priesthood since it fobad marriage and discouraged close attachments. Yoda taught that Jedi should let go of everything you're afraid to lose. This would allow the Force to act thru you.

God knows that the time will come when people will try to explain about him aside from his inspired word the bible.
1 Corinthians 1:20 Where is the wise man? Where the scribe? Where the debater of this system of things? Did not God make the wisdom of the world foolish? 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through its wisdom did not get to know God, God saw good through the foolishness of what is preached to save those believing.
WHAT? Would Jehovah use foolishness? Not really! But he can and does use what appears foolish to the world. He does so in order to save people who know and love him. Through its wisdom, the world cannot get to know God. Jesus Christ made this clear when he said in prayer: “Righteous Father, the world has, indeed, not come to know you.”—John 17:25.

If i read something about God (Allah) from a different source other than a Islamic source and it's true, then i would definitely believe in it!
Many religions share the same beliefs about Allah but they differ when they bring polythiesm and other stuff!
Hope that helps!

Once you limit your avenues of knowledge you lose your way. G-d is everywhere so therefore it makes sense that you can gain insight into him from everything.
