While plasmas are brighter and more affordable than LCD's in larger sizes, because of the burn-in issue they're not ideal for watching sports, since televised sports have onscreen graphics that stay on the screen for a long time.

I still find it funny when people answer questions about plasmas. The problem is the information is about 2-3 years old. While technically it's possible to burn a plasma in it is really hard to do. Estimates put it at around 20 hours of the exact same image on the screen, with absolutely no change. This means that you would have to want to burn your TV in. Now a days, even with sports, commercials come every 15 minutes maybe. 5 seconds of something else is enough to wipe the slate clean for burn-n. I wouldn't worry about it now a days.
As for sports. Plasmas are still better. While LCDs have made strides, they still cannot match plasma in handling things that are fast paced. This shows is called screen shodowing. The problem is LCds are not fast enough for our eyes.
I have a DLP TV an love it. If I had a choice between LCD and plasma I would always go with a plasma. It still has a better picture. The only time LCDs are better is if you are in a room that has a lot of light. Plasma reflect in these situations. LCDs do not.

Each type has its own ups and downs. LCD is inexpensive, but the image quality suffers due to poor black levels, mediocre contrast and slow refresh rates. They have gotten better in recent years but most videophiles avoid them for general TV use. They would likely be better for gaming since they do not suffer from burn-in as plasmas can. Plasma offers better image quality and has black levels closer to a CRT, and you can get a true HD 1080p set for a reasonable price. I would suggest a Samsung or Panasonic as these tend to be the better models-one thing you need to know about plasma is that the quality varies more from maker to maker, so do research before purchasing, and keep in mind that they are prone to burn-in from static images, like game screen icons. Again, they have improved recently but it's still an issue. DLP is a good choice, but the sets are physically large and somewhat expensive. They work by refracting light off of tiny mirrors and require replacement of the bulb every so often, which can run around $100. DLP is a good choice if you have the room and pocketbook.

LCD is my choice. Reason being is that plasma T.V.s are more likely to suffer from burn in. Say if you pause a DVD or game for an extended period of time the image will burn into the screen on a plasma set but LCD will not and the picture on an LCD set is almost as good as a plasma.
