A Panini is a cooking iron - like a waffle iron with grill lines (think a slim version of the George Forman Grill). It is used to sear the outside of an Italian style sandwich that has firm cheese, meat and vegetables (usually roasted). It is a lovely hot sandwich.

Panini is a sandwich that is pressed and grilled in a grill with a top (like a waffle iron-type sandwich maker or similar to george foreman) Usually it is rustic bread, meats and cheeses. the press makes grill marks and heats to the contents.

There are two anwers: If you are referring to the Italian sandwich, it is used like our sandwiches are. If you are referring to the grill; it is used to make those Italian sandwiches.
