But has typically been available in the past. He sleeps a lot, has been physically sick often, missing work, forgets things. Tends to lie or embellish a lot too. Are these signs of depression or something else?

Is it also a sign if he hardly brushes his teeth anymore? Depression or something causing him not to care about himself or hygiene?

yes, actually severe depression and maybe something else. if you still cannot reach him it would not be a bad idea to report it to the police out of concern for his safety. explain to them what you did to us, they would think its unusual too. if he is so depressed he could have hurt himself or there could have been an accident and he needs help either way have them check on him its their job. if you can try and convince your friend to see a doctor, there is medication that can help him with his problems, even go so far as to go with him. you cannot save him but you can try to help him help himself.

Sleeping more than usual, not going to work, forgetfulness, social withdrawal and a lack of personal hygiene are all common symptoms of depression. But only a doctor can really diagnose it because some physical disorders that can cause the same symptoms need to be treated or ruled out. Since it just started recently it may be seasonal affective disorder. Increased sleep is a major symptom of "winter depression". Can you contact someone that might have a key to his place like one of his parents or siblings? Someone really needs to go and check on him and make sure he's OK.

Kind of sounds like me when I was younger. Found out I had my proirities not right, and I was never satisfied. If your friend is lieing, there must be something he is trying to hide or maybe insecure about. But I would personaly think that these are some signs. But the only way to find out is to talk to him/her as a friend and see whats up in their lives, and if not so well.. try to be a positive influence and help guide him in the right direction in a freindly way.

Yes very much so but don't completely rule out physical illness. If you can't reach them and you are really concerned call the police and explain to them why you are concerned and ask them to check on the person. When they go to the door and get no answer they HAVE to do something more to find out the if the person inside is OK. Good Luck

Personally, I see those types of qualities in people who always need to be better then the people around them. Did something really good happen to you in the last little while, that would cause your friend to become jealous of you? This is just a guess, he may very well be depressed over anything really.

He may be visiting someone for the holidays. If you know for a fact that he is not visiting someone, then I'd call the police or a therapist, just in case(not saying he's dead, but he may be in a little bit of trouble). I have no idea what else you could do, sorry.
