So, I felt like I was getting ill for about a week now, and finally three days ago, the "flu" hit me like a pile of bricks. I had a temperature of 102, and I've had almost a constant fever since. My nose is runny, and my head feels like it's going to implode, or something. And my throat...is bleeding, and red, and I keep coughing up bloody stuff from my throat. Yeah, gross, I know. It's worse when you have to experience it.

I went to see a doctor and was given Tamiflu, for what my mom says is actually a virus...she was a nurse for 27 years, so I don't know who to trust...

Anyway, if my mom is right, then I recieved the wrong medication.

But still...I just want to get better. I want to sleep, and I want to sing again. What more can I do to ensure a speedy recovery?

Thanks.

Sorry, honey, there just isn't any answers out here that you haven't already sought from professionals.

However, am treading here on rough waters, when I tell you that I would believe your nurse- Mom before the Doctor.

Nurses are more directly involved in personal care of the patients than physicians. Doctors are constantly bombarded with medical samples and false promises by pharmaceutical reps and often prescribe medications based entirely on that information: not by results he personally has observed in patients. Nurses have many, many times saved patients lives by refusing to give a prescribed medication, to a patient because she or he knew what the reactions would be.

Tamiflu IS an antiviral, not an antibiotic. Sorry, your mother is wrong. But you are really supposed to start it within 2 days of getting the flu. I still think you should take it--and take it all. So, take the medication, drink plenty of fluids and rest. You'll be better soon. Info on Tamiflu at:

Tamiflu is for viruses, the flu virus. But you have to start taking it within 48 hours of the start of symptoms for it to work well. I'd give it a shot it might help.

actually it sounds like you have strep throat, not just a virus. if you're not improving, you need to go back to the doctor to get either a throat culture or a rapid strep test.

tamiflu won't help with strep throat- you need antibiotics.
