I always thought panini was a type of sandwich, not an ingredient.

A panini is a grilled sandwich, usually somewhat smashed with grill marks on it. (Not like a grilled cheese in a pan.)

There are two anwers: If you are referring to the Italian sandwich, it is used like our sandwiches are. If you are referring to the grill; it is used to make those Italian sandwiches.
