I received something in the mail today and called which was supposedly a credit card bill I owe from over 10 years ago. I don't remember this at all, so how can I not have to pay this? Is there a limit on this for years you have to pay it back? It seems as now as I getting my credit in good standing, I keep receiving bills from a long time ago. Any advice would be appreciated. I am disputing the bill.

it was probably sold to a collection agency recently and they are now collecting on it. Check your state statutes - normally there is a statute of limitation of 3-4 yrs from last payment. If the last payment you have paid is at least 7 yrs ago they cannot put it on your bureau. I would mail them a letter telling them to cease and desist all written and verbal communication with you. This would force them to file a judgment and if it has passed your statute of limitations they cannot do that. NOTE: If you do pay it they can place it as a paid collection on your bureau. Any payment resets the time allowed

If they send you the bill then perhaps you had purchase some thing some time or the other with this credit card, you could been sent the bill either it was misplaced, or lost in the mail or some how it didnot get to your hands, but if you are in doubt call the card company, ask the agent what and where did you make the purchase, the cost of the item or items, all the information should be on their file, now if they have no record then it would be time for you to do your disputing.

If you had the card, they are still trying to collect on the past debt. They can report you at anytime to keep the file open. If your credit is fine and has not shown up on the past credit reports, I agree with you disputing it.

But be careful! This could be an attempt to scam you out of your money! DO NOT CALL ANY PHONE NUMBERS OR GO TO ANY WEBSITE LISTED ON THE BILL, LOOK IT UP ONLINE AND VERIFY THE NUMBER LISTED THERE. DO NOT TRY TO SIGN UP OR IN, JUST MAKE SURE THE PHONE NUMBER IS THE SAME. I would call them if the phone numbers are the same, but ask for everything in writing and DO NOT give any information over the phone. If this is from a collection agency, I would contact the CC company directly to verify they had sent this to collections and what firm is handling it. Ask for previous statements from the CC company. Ask for the address and phone number they have you listed under. If you do not recognize the info they give you, tell them it's not you. (I can go on-line and look up a person's previous address and phone numbers easily.) Just protect your current info as they could be phishing for current info. If the person on the phone asks you questions such as SS#, current address, etc., don't give it to them if you are suspecious. Even you current address could be helpful in a scam.

It is probably coming up on 10 years ans this is a last ditch at recovering. If you can prove you paid it do so. If not, any renegotiation to pay off a debt starts the 10 year process all over again. if you tried to reconcile it 5 years ago and did not, its there for another 5 years.
