Believe it or not, Lysol is one of the best weapons you have against colds and flu in winter. I keep a spray bottle of diluted Lysol in the bathroom and use it on the sink and fixtures every morning, and my husband and I have not caught colds or flu since I started doing that. I think the germs getting their little life cycles chopped in half has something to do with it.
If you should get sick though:
1)Take extra Vitamin C.
2)Drink hot things, such as bouillon or hot lemon and honey. The salt will help sooth your throat, the steam will help clear congestion, and the liquid will in general keep you hydrated.
3)Take garlic tablets: A lot of cold germs don't like that.
4)Use zinc lozenges to sooth your cough.
5)Use Nyquil so you can sleep at night.
6)Sleep as much as you can: That will give your body time to actually heal.

The number one best thing you can do to keep yourself healthy is also the easiest. Wash your hands frequently, like at least every two hours. I keep a hand sanitizer in my pocket or purse. The second best thing is to keep your hands away from your face unless you know they are clean.
And the third is to avoid large crowds.
If you catch cold, use Zicam nasal swabs as directed. They really to shorten and lessen severity of colds.

I take 500 mg. of Vitamin C twice a day. If I feel myself getting sick, I start taking Echinacea. If I do get sick, I take about 4 Echinacea tablets throughout the first day and that usually does the trick. If I catch a cold, my cold lasts 3 days tops.

We live in a house with a forced air furnace which dries the air out terribly. We use a humidifier in the winter and as long as we keep it going we never get colds or flu.

Hmm eat a spoon or two of honey every day...
But you really cant avoid it because its mainly caused by the voulnarabuility of your immune system resulting from the temperature changes when you go outside and in, so allways dress up warm.

To strengthen your immune system and cleanse out your body, drink this in the morning and at night, don't worry, it is delicious!
Heat up water as if for tea. Disolve 2 and a half tablespoons of honey in the water. Soak a lemon slice in the drink for 5 minutes.
Drink it! It will cleanse out your body and strengthen your immune system.
