It will take power from it when it is on, but not off. the amount of power they use is very very small compared to other things. If you do connect to the battery, use an in line fuse to protect the radio and vehicle in general, from fire that is. A 10 amp fuse should do the job, fuses and holders can be purchased at almost any parts store or Radio Shack.

Whether you connect directly or through some other circuit doesn't affect the amount of power a radio takes. If you are going for a direct hook up, do please use a fuse rated for the radio, and don't forget to turn it off at night. But no, if your battery needs replaced, it's just a coincidence.

If you run the radio with the engine off it will run the battery down and you will have to recharge it and make surew you fuse your hot wire for protection.
