Cats are very clean. That's why they cover up whatever they do in the litter box. I scoop mine twice a day and change the entire litter once a week. I was bad once and went one day longer than I should have cleaning the littler box and one of my cats pooped right next to the box because it was too dirty for him to use. I never let that happen again and now clean it on a regular basis.

Cat are very clean animal, they clean them-self all the time and they cover their poop too.

Cats have may have been domesticated by man, but they keep many of their wild instincts. One of them is the urge to hide their traces to enemies and potential preys.
They hide all their excrements and urine, both in a litter box and in a garden.

They do it to cover their "scent" - I think it's a hold over from their days in the wild. Or, it might be that they have a very keen sense of smell - and, let's face it - it usually doesn't smell very good!
