We are in a pretty bad situation now. My sister in-law got into some trouble w/ the law and will be going into a rehab program this morning. She has 3 kids that we have taken emergency guardianship of them. (One year old, 3 year old, and a 6 year old!) The 6 year old has a pretty nasty cold and has passed it onto my husband and I, along w/ the other 2 kids. He was admitted into the hospital a few months ago for phenomena and seemed to have recovered from that.
Now he is coughing alot. It sounds really deep and bronchiolar. He works himself up so much that he vomits, and it sometimes has blood in the saliva. My husband and I have been staying up all night to make sure that he is okay. He has pretty severe asthma. His mother insists that this is all asthma, but I really doubt that, The asthma medication isn't working and all of the cough and cold medication doesn't seem to help. He is going into the ER this morning. Has anyone had anything like this happen to their children?????????

He is with his grandmother at the ER. I am at work, trying to pay my bills, due to the fact that I now have three children to support. I think this is a better situation then sitting w/ his mother while she smokes crack!

sorry for your dilemma but the child does need medical attention.
the blood can be simply from tiny tears in his stomach from the vomiting. could be bronchitis with that kind of cough. pnemonia cough isn't that deep when it is acute. pnemonia cough is a painful cough and usually short lighter coughs because of the pain you try not to cough. if the cough sounds rattling and expels a lot of mucous it's probably bronchitis. either way the child is sick and you are doing the right thing for him. I feel sorry for those children and I sincerely hope your sister gets straightened out.
good luck.

The asthma medication isn't working because his lungs are too constricted. What he needs right now is a nebulizer. That should help relax his lungs. If there is no infection, the doctors may prescribe Pediapred- which is an oral steriod to help his lungs recover. But they absolutely need to make sure that the possibility of pneumonia is ruled out.. one of the major problems with steriods is that it can bring out pneumonia in full force, because it weakens the immune system, allowing the bacteria to multiply.
My son, who is turning 5 next month, just went through the exact same thing, and the nebulizer and steroid have helped him a great deal.(Be prepared to put up with an EXTREMELY CRANKY child- PediaPred is loads of fun for the whole family!!)
Don't panic(believe me, I know it's hard not to).. he could also be stressed and it's making his asthma worse.. which is why you need to be calm. He and his siblings have obviously been through a lot in a short period of time.
If you have any other questions, please feel free to email me:

whooping cough is on the rise again. thats what it sounds like. Good thing you are going to the ER. If it is, please monitor your 1 year old closely, too,it can be quite severe in babys and affect their breathing.

The following are info links on whooping cough

it could be severe asthma, but less likely

never had this happen but your takin a good step by taking him to the ER. it could still be asmatha, and his inhaler isn't strong enough anymore. It could be something completly different. try to relax and let the doctors do their jobs
