18 months is not too old for formula or breastmilk, many doctors are now suggestion that you continue breastmilk or formula to that age and only stop IF they are eating enough and IF they have ample levels of iron on a blood test.[1] You can also use goat's milk, particularly for a breastfed baby if you weaned awhile ago. Goat's milk is closer to human milk. It is available at some grocery stores and at some Wal-Marts. It can also be purchased on-line, http://www.meyenberg.com/searsoffer.htm [2]

Failure to thrive can be caused by emotional issues. I am NOT calling you a bad parent, or a bad person. But sometimes when you take the advice of well-meaning people and do things that work for other people, or in books instead of what works for your family you can have problems. Go read this article, maybe it applies to you: http://www.askdrsears.com/html/10/t131200.asp

I hope some of that helps. You are a great parent for worrying so much. Take care!

My 18 month old son did the exact same thing and to this day still does (he is 3 now). Most of the time he would just snack on little things. We kept him drinking and would let him eat what he wanted when he wanted with in reason. Normally he would be cutting teeth and that is why, some times he would have a little cold. My doctor said that this was normal and to keep him hydrated and if he was not eating anything to supplement with vitamins or pedisure something like that. If it last longer that about two weeks then I would ask your doctor because my son always went back to eating. If you think it is the teeth try relieving the pain and see if that helps. Good Luck!

Pedia sure. It's just a phase and pediasure has the vitamins she needs to get through the phase.

In addition to what your pediatritian has told you, my suggestion is:

Hold her. Give her your time. Don't put her in daycare. Keep her life as stress-free as possible. Take her to the park and swing with her. Don't give her junk food. Love her.
