I'm seeing the results of it already in my daughter. She's 18 months but has a larger vocabulary than some of the other similarly aged children we know and at Christmas yesterday once she received her books in her mind there were no more presents. She carried her books off to the corner and sat down and "read" to everyone for most of the day. I know that my parents read to me every night when I was little and as a result I could read passably before kindergarten. I now read about 4 books a week in my "spare" time and have a larger vocabulary for it. I would love for my daughter to grow up with the same love of literature and reading as I developed. And I think it'll be hard for her not to with me as her mommy and a grandma with a degree in english lit. lol

Good for you. Your question shows you care not just about baby's diet or diapers but his/her mind also. There are many benefits.
First, your baby grows into the sound of your voice. IThe mother/child bond is strengthened each time you read and each time to talk to him/her.
Second, if you read with inflection, the baby will enter the world with a communicative sense. It will help with his/her socialization and it will benefit his cognitive patterns (how he/she thinks).
Third, as he/she matures, reading will be an acceptable, normal part of his/her world. Like the sound of your voice, your scent, the way your furniture is arranged, he/she will grow up with reading as part of his/her life. The baby will become a reader which is the foundation upon which all other learning is based. It is vital.
I read to my son since he was 3 days old. It was part of our day and always part of bedtime ritual. When he was in 7th grade, he was reading at college level and is an excellent conversationalist. He has a vast vocabulary, comprehends written material quickly, and is skilled at all elements of language arts (esxcp spellin). Keep up the good work. You only have 18 or so years to go. God Bless both of you...

My fiance and I read to our son from the day we concieved. Results: My sister and sister in law and me were all pregnant at the same time. The babies were born two months apart. My sister reads to her children but does not teach them, they don't say words right and most of the time you can't understand them. My sister in law and brother are both teachers and they spend a lot of time working with their kids and you would think that they were a lot older than they really are. They are well behaved and can speak very well. My son is read to every night, we spend at least an hour every day working on things that he will learn at school. He is very well behaved and we have gotten so many compliments on how well he talks for his age and how much he knows. Conclusions: I would say that reading and teach go hand in hand, if you just read then really all they can pick up is the sound of words and try to mimmick them, but if you teach while you read then they can learn.

All I know is that I have read to my daughter everyday since the day she was born, and she's very smart. I know that just sounds like a proud parent, but really, anyone will tell you how verbal she is and her vocabulary is out of this world for a 5-year-old!
