I'm Greek and my girlfriend is a very proud Puerto Rican. She told me about this a few days ago... We Greeks are going through the same exact thing with Albanian people! They come into the country, learn a few Greek words and they fake that they are Greeks just to get jobs! But why do Dominicans lie? Could it be that they cant get jobs too? Enlighten me.... Un Griego que ama a mujer latina ;-)

CG, I meant Dominicans who want to go to the United States who claim they are Puerto Rican only because they feel thay they wont be asked for any ID.

this is my opinion.

This is the first I ever heard of this; but my guess, if its about employment, Dominicans will need to show their work authorization cards and/or their permanent residence cards. Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens since Puerto Rico is a U.S. commonwealth.

What happens is that Puerto Rican are US citizens, the currency is US Dollars, but speak Spanish. It is ideal for Dominican, because they don't have in PR the language barrier, but have the dollars and if they manage to legalize their status, they can travel freely to US.

I live in Puerto Rico and know a lot of Dominicans, in fact, my neighbors are dominicans but I have never heard of a dominican faking beign a Puerto Rican. It's really hard for them to fake it mainly because of their distinctive accent that doesn't really go away beacuse they don't have to learn another language and also because of their physical appearance. Dominicans tend to be more dark skinned than Puerto Ricans since Puerto Ricans have mixed more with white people due to the great number of them that came here from Spain during colonization. These people go trough really hard times, specially if they are illegal inmigrants because people give them jobs but pay them so little and make them work so hard that it has turned into a sort of form of slavery. Many people get mad at dominicans beacuse they get jobs and from the money they earn form those horrible jobs that no one wants to do they make a more decent living for their families and themselves than they would ever make at their native country or than many other Puerto Ricans that conform themselves with just the coupons they recieve from the gorvernment because they are too lazy or proud to work the jobs a dominican works. Before jumping into conclusions and getting mad at these people I suggest people to visit the Dominican Republic, and by that I don't mean go to the five-star hotels and bathe at the pool and eat like you've never eaten before for seven days straight, but to go and see the real thing at any rural community and you will understand when you see naked children selling fruit and 19-year-olds with five children and no teeth because they have never in their lives been to a dentist, or a doctor for that matter, just how poverty-stricken that country really is and why is it that every day there comes a boat made for 200 people filled with 500 dominicans that have made the dangerous journey from the East coast of the Dominican Republic to the West coast of Puerto Rico. More than mad or jealous these good people should make any Puerto Rican proud to have such hard-working and joyful immigrants in their country.
