And if so, does the weight come off after the medication is stopped?

Yes, Prednisone can make a person gain weight, and no, it does not automatically come off after the medication is stopped.

To lose the weight, you may have to go on a diet to lower your insulin reactivity. The library link at www.hufa.org has some book suggestions. I especially found Protein Power to be helpful.

If you have any type of blood sugar imbalance due to insulin overproduction (diabetes, hypoglycemia, etc.) then losing weight is harder. If the blood sugar imbalance leads to a candida albicans (yeast) overgrowth, it makes it near impossible.

Yes it can make you gain weight. I was on Predinisone for many years due to my Rheumatoid Arthritis. I did not gain weight from it but it definitely made it harder to get the weight off when I wanted to lose some. If the weight is from swelling that some people get when taking Prednisone, then yes it will eventually come off after it is stopped. However, it is hard to lose weight anyway so it will be just as hard to lose it after taking Prednisone and gaining as it would be in any other case.

My mother takes prednisone for lupus, and yes, it has caused her to gain weight. She is constantly hungry when she's on it, but I also think it is just a side-effect of the medication.

However, she will take the weight gain over feeling like crap. When she doesn't take her prednisone, she's horribly sick.

Talk to your doctor about your concerns. Hopefully he/she can sit down and discuss the medication with you. I can't tell you if she has lost any weight once she has stopped the medication because she is on it long-term.

I don't have the scientific answer for this but I can say that I had a tear in my sternum cartilage about a yr ago and took Prednisone for about 7-10 days I think. Personally I lost weight because it made me lose my appetite. Short term, I would say it does not affect your weight, but long term, I can't speak to that.

Yes Prednisone will make you gain weight. It is usually temporary, if on a short course of medication. If you need to take it long term you can develope some side effects such as "moon face", fat deposits around the cheeks and chin that cause a rounding of the face. Stopping the drug USUALLY resolves the symptoms. You need to discuss the reason for taking this and side effects of the drug with your doctor and make sure it is the frug of choice for your treatment.

Personally it never did me. But I am the type that can eat two whole cows, two horses, a truck load of potato's, and a couple of hogs a day and never gain a pound.

But all I wanted to do was work out all the time. Get home from work and hit the weight machine for two to four hours a day. When I was taking it.

However I have seen a lot of people I worked with blow up like toad frogs when they took it. And a couple of guys ended up with boobs as big as Pamela Anderson's (before she had the implants removed) from taking it.

Large dosage's over time will also damage your kidneys and liver as well..

What are you feeding your dog? Just cause you're feeding it a lot of food does NOT mean that your dog is absorbing it. It could be eating all that food and just pooping it out. Also canned food will give your dog runny stool and consists mostly of water. Exercise will help your dog gain weight- muscle weighs more than fat, also depending on its breed it may not gain weight... If you're really worried contact a vet and ask about food, potential vitamins your dog may need, and proper exercise to help increase weight.
