Even though you don't feel anything is wrong as far as a misfire or bad driveability, you need to get it checked out. It could be something as simple as leaving the gas cap loose or off and the computer found that. It will store a code that most good mechanics recognize as that. There code be a problem that is leading to a big problem and cost though. Sometimes addressing a situation early leads to cost savings. If the code was a minor one, ie the loose gas cap, the computer will continue to check this and if it passes several more tests on a continuous basis, it will turn it out itself. You can't clear these codes by disconnecting the battery, you have to clear with a scanner installed.

Your car has an OBD II (2)computer. If there were no problem, it would reset itself and turn the light off. Disconnecting the battery on this car will not turn it off. That only works on the old OBD 1 computers. It will just come back on. It may be a minor problem or it could be a major problem in the works. Autozone will read the code for free (but they won't always turn the light off anymore) or you can find someone with a code scanner. This is a starting point because the code is to be used for diagnosis. For example, if the code turns out to be an 02 sensor, it could be that the 02 sensor is bad or it could also mean that the 02 sensor is OK but something else is causing it to give a bad reading. I'd get it checked out because it may run forever like that or it may leave you stranded soon. I worked on a 1999 Grand Am yesterday that had the light on for a long time and the lady was told to ignore it. It turned out to be a bad fuel pump and finally left her sitting along side the expressway. Be safe, not sorry. Good Luck.
P.S.
A loose gas cap can make the light come on so as others have said, check that because it is very common. Tighten it until it clicks.

If you disconnect the battery for a minute the computer should reset itself. If your service light comes back on try to see if you can pull any troubleshooting codes and see what it says is causing the problem. You should be able to find out how to pull the codes and the codes meaning online. Good Luck & God Bless!

You can try to reset the computer of the car by removing the Positive Cable attachment of the Battery for three minutes and the reinstalling it this should reset your computer but if the problem persists and returns you should get a Diagnosis check from your GM dealer.

Even if you don't feel something is wrong, it could have problems. The gas cap might be lose. It might need more oil, it could be that it needs more coolant. You could go to a garage, Autozone or Pepboys to find out what the problem is and they could turn the light off. Autozone is free. Garages and Pepboys will have a small fee.
