I was give a quaker gray parrot for Christmas, and I have been told that I now I cannot burn candles: because the bird will die. Does anyone know if this is true? I love my new pet, and I don't want anything to happen to him.

Any volatile oil (fragrance) has the potential for causing illness and possible death in birds. Obviously, the concentration in a product and length of exposure are factors to be considered. Products containing a high concentration of volatile oils, as in Glade Plug-Ins, should be avoided completely.

Some other toxic items are listed below:

The Toxic
(and just generally unhealthy)
Alcohol
Asparagus
Avocado
Butter
Caffeine
Chocolate
Egg Plant
Milk/cream in large quantities
Olives
Raw Peanuts
Rhubarb

Enjoy your new family member!!!

I've never heard of it, but maybe some substances coming out of candles could harm the parrot, they have a quite sensitive respiratory system. Better to ask a vet or a parrot breeder.

Fumes that are harmless to us can kill birds within seconds. Some families have lost pets to hidden Teflon in space heaters and other appliances. Teflon fumes are absolutely deadly to birds. Deaths occur frequently because people keep nonstick cookware in their homes figuring they will never overheat it. Humans make mistakes and forget pans on the stove, so it is best to get rid of nonstick cookware. Other hazards include scented aerosol sprays and other spray chemicals, essential oils, scented candles, and anything using pine scenting. There are alternatives for many bug sprays.

Candles have many uses & will not hurt your parrot unless he gets close enough to catch on fire. A plain candle is made of parafin and I have seen parakeets chew a candle to pieces as well as crayon. So I seriously doubt that the fumes are going to harm your parrot.

Candles clean the air of obnoxious orders, they are used just to bring life into a room, some are sented and can help with oders and make things smell fresh. Many people like the feeling that a room full of candles can induce.

No a candle will not harm your parret. I love burning candles and have one burning most all the time. The fire is hipnotic and I love to watch the flame dance.

You may want to speak to a vet or a professional about this. I have not heard about the candles being harmful, but I have heard that cooking with teflon pots and pans is a no-no and they will kill your pet because of the chemicals the teflon releases in to the air when heated.

Just be carful not to do it too close to the Parrot. Most Parrots are Catholic and are quite accustomed to candles and incense.
