At home you can try music and song, as Autism spectrum tends to lean toward repetition and order. Singing songs with your little boy may help. Try different songs until you come across a style and tempo he likes. Remember the old saying "If you want to capture someones' attention... whisper"? Play the music at a volume that can be heard well but not so loud as to drown out other activity noises.
Don't give up, as there is ALWAYS a chance! It will happen... just be patient and consistent. In the meantime use some symbols to facilitate comprehension of wants and needs. Label things and repeat the names to your little boy. It will work... it just takes time.
Keep your chin up!

It is possible, and it is also possible that he understands what you are saying now. He may just not be responding. My son (who has Asperger's) was not completely nonverbal at three, but he only said a few words. He didn't form sentences at all. Around the age of four, he began using complete sentences. There was a total change in his behavior, also. He was finally able to communicate what he wanted. He still has tantrums (age six now), but they're not as frequent as before. For us, three was by far the most difficult age (to date) as far as communication. He knew what he was thinking, but we had no idea. I hope that your son blossoms some day, too. Good luck.

a good friend of mine has an autistic son who is 4 and a half. he was not verbal until about the time he turned four, and is still very delayed. his mom was very insistent(which is very neccesary) in advocating for him, and now he is in an early childhood development class, funded through the public school system. he and his family are learning sign language , and its been sooo very helpful for them.the little guy was so frustrated in not being able to communicate( and so was his family!) but slowly he is making progress.
my son has aspergers syndrome so i understand the feelings you are having.its scarey and sad ,....but in the end...just remember that YOU were chosen to be his mom for a purpose....you can do the best by him! be strong, and remember that you are not alone....many of us are going through it and are here to share with you.
blessings.........

I've got a friend. He told me he started talking when he was 4. Although he is not autistic. Just pray to God. He listens. Whatever the outcome, accept freely. Trust in Him. He knows best.

My nephew has autism. They *can* actually understand you and their surroundings, but can't relay that to you. My nephew is now 12 and talks a little, but its very hard for them to communicate.
