Red wine in limitation is good for your heart. Not really sure why. Has something to do with chemicals. But only one 8 oz. glass a day not more.

You can argue that pretty much any food is good for your health - it all depends on qauntity.

Plato may have been wiser than he knew when he said, "Nothing more excellent or valuable than wine was ever granted by the Gods to man."

Drinking one glass a day for women and up to two glasses a day for men may decrease the risk of heart disease, cancer and stroke. Excessive or binge drinking, however, doesn't produce the same benefits. In other words, when it comes to red wine: more is not better.

According to scientists in Spain, drinking wine, especially red, stops people from developing colds.

A team of scientists from Barts and the London School of Medicine, and the Queen Mary University in London, may have found a mechanism which points to the benefits of red wine. They say it appears to interfere with the production of a body chemical which is vital to the process which clogs up arteries and increases the risk of a heart attack.

One of two glasses of wine provides a significant amount of nutrients and protective flavinoids. Drinking more than two glasses may actually be detrimental however. Red wines are considered healthier than the white wines. Look up resveratrol for the main healthy bioflavinoid in red wines.
Have a happy, prosperous, and healthy New Year!

I've read that having one glass of red wine a day will keep you healthy. I guess it helps keep your blood pressure/cholesterol down but a lot of that is hereditary anyway. I don't know about you but I don't drink every single day. I only have a glass of wine with dinner about once every other week. I prefer White Zinfandel which is a pinkish wine.

I have friends who earnestly drink a glass of red wine every evening, convinced of its benefits for their health. It's a good excuse! Many studies investigated the benefits of red wine suggested that moderate amount of red wine (one drink a day for women and two drinks a day for men) lowers the risk of heart attack for people in middle age by ~ 30 to 50 percent. It is also suggested that alcohol such as red wine may prevent additional heart attacks if you have already suffered from one. Other studies also indicated that red wine can raise HDL cholesterol (the Good cholesterol) and prevent LDL cholesterol (the Bad cholesterol) from forming. Red wine may help prevent blood clots and reduce the blood vessel damage caused by fat deposits. Indeed, studies showed that people from the Mediterranean region who regularly drank red wine have lower risks of heart disease.
Red wine is a particularly rich source of antioxidants flavonoid phenolics, so many studies to uncover a cause for red wine's effects have focused on its phenolic constituents, particularly resveratrol and the flavonoids. Resveratrol, found in grape skins and seeds, increases HDL cholesterol and prevent blood clotting. Flavonoids, on the other hand, exhibit antioxidant properties helping prevent blood clots and plaques formation in arteries.
However, this should not be the excuse for drinking more red wine than before.Studies showed that alcohol drinking may increase triglycerides (another Bad blood lipids) and result in weight gain due to its empty calories. Other studies also suggested that alcohol consumption is associated with cancer risk.
So the jury is still out on this one!

Not in excess...the natural tanins in red wine are supposed to be beneficial for the heart. I've heard a glass a day is about right....that's a glass of normal wine glass size!
