Beans contain complex carbohydrates that cannot be digested by the human digestive tract, but can be fermented in the colon by intestinal bacteria to produce a lot of hydrogen and methane gas (which is why flatulence is flammable!). I always take a couple of Beano tablets with a meal that includes legumes. Beano has enzymes that help digest the carbs which would otherwise cause the gas problems.
Have a happy, healthy, prosperous, and gas-free New Year!

Beans have a sugar in them that you cannot digest, but the bacteria in your colon can. The gas you pass is given off by the bacteria when they digest it. Nice thought, huh?
