Because the powers doing the torturing had control of religion. It's a pretty easy thing to do when a people's religion is based on the word of a holy book and most of the people couldn't read.

Last time I checked, Jesus wasn't alive 300 years ago...and I can't see how one guy can "stop" religion.

and I love how you imply that all the torture in Europe is the result of Jesus and religion. (sarcasm)

Well, religion is used to torture... and Jesus... (I think he's dead, isn't it?... hahaha)

I think that the only thing that can stop that kind of things is people, but we only rebel against stupid things... Why the world permitted the extermination made by Nazis.

You're referring to Cesare Beccaria and "Dei Delitti e Delle Pene"; in a nutshell, he said "sin" and "crime" are different concepts: with a crime you cause damage to the society, while sin does not and should be judged and eventually convicted by God.

How do you know he didn't? He is the Lord of the Universe, not any one spot. He could have been behind this man and supporting him and manuvering events towards that goal.
He made animals and humans the eye is a wonder, a miracle.
He takes care of us like a parent takes care of a new baby when sometimes that child has no idea what the parent is doing.
