I have just bought a male canary and my husband has said that I should get a female one to keep him company and make him sing more...
Is this right or if I want him to sing am I better off keeping him on his own???

Oh you better believe he will sing more. Especially in the breeding season when they are ready to mate. A Male's song is a luxury for the hen and also a necessity.

Just make sure you introduce them slowly,by first seperating them and gradually moving them closer together. After a few days when your new Hen has become acustomed to her new surroundings then you may put them together in the same cage.
This is very important as you do not want to frighten her in her new home.Canaries need time to adjust.

If she finds his song appealing they will mate and have hatch- lings. The first sign of this is you should start to see them kissing in which they rub their beaks together. Another sign is if the male starts feeding the Hen through regurgitation. Then you know that they are in love.

When you notice this starting to happen then BINGO you are going to have baby Canaries.First, she will start building her nest
so you must provide her with nesting material such as burlap, cut into thin strips, cotton, yarn, straw, anything useful for her to build with even some tiny twigs from outside, just make sure you sterilize the twigs first,to rid them of insects. You can sterilize them by boiling them in water for a half hour. You can also buy some from your local pet store or arts and crafts store.

The song of a Canary as you probably already know is very beautiful.I specialize in Canaries and absolutely adore them.
You will too. I am quite sure of that.Good luck and enjoy.

Canaries are very special birds. Excellent choice!!

I used to raise canaries years ago. I had to practically give hens away, but I had one pair the raised chicks several times, and I kept them after I gave up the hobby. That male would sing his heard out on cue. He was especially fond of Wagner, and if I whistled a short passage from the overture to Taunhauser, he would cut loose and sing for twenity minutes. He lived to be eight years old and sang to the end. Unusual, but they can live a long time on the correct diet (celary leaves help) and sing with the hen iin the cage. Big cage!!!

They do sing when they are with females but not as much, you should seperate them unil you see the female carrying nest material and teh male is signing his head off! Than put them together to breed.

He will sing more because he is going to be trying to court her for breeding. I would educate myself on how and when to breed them and then place the correct nesting box in with them. If he sings less separate them to see if he will sing out for her. GOOD LUCK!
