if they have been written out To you and you have not cashed them - YES! The "Life" of a check varies anywhere from 6 months to 5 years. It depends on the bank you are dealing with.

Depending on the jurisdiction, cheques become outdated after 6-12 months. Some issuers can refuse to honor a cheque after 60 days (it will say so on the cheque, and it is legal)

It depends on who the cheque issuer's bank is. When you set up a cheque account you would usually set a time limit for the cheque to be presented within before a stop is placed on it (e.g. 90 days, 12 months).
