Good question, rocknroll, and how wonderful to have a spouse who supports your efforts in the arts; that is not common, he may be a keeper! Anyway, the thing to do to get started is seek out juried shows in your area-- any art gallery or museum should be able to give you a list of up-coming juried shows. You will expose your art to the right people and you will learn faster from their critiques than any other way.

You may want to start by donating a painting to your local PBS. Its great publicity as they will interview you and also feature your painting for several days during the funcraising event. Here is an example of a Dana Levin painting sold at the Rhode Island PBS 2006 art auction.

Local art galleries, coffee shops, art stores. We have a coffee shop here that will showcase local artists. Start a portfolio with photo's of your paintings and go talk to local store owners to see if they would be interested in displaying your work. You might even want to set-up a display of your work at local festivals, or art's and crafts shows.

do you have a local artists guild? or artist's club or group? check with the library for such as that they have oportunities to show your work...coffee houses show art.
get a portfolio together so you have some ready examples of your work to show these people. check with the library about where you can show your art, our library here shows art all the time, and we get a whole wall for a month at time (last year i had 19 pictures up and my wife had 27 on the opposite wall at the same time...it was great, i set us up at the same time and took us down at the same time)

Depending on where you reside, you should check out local galleries, artist guilds, schools, hospitals, etc. Also check the newspaper for upcoming artist exhibitions and events. You should attend and get to know people and network. Good luck.

Local hospitals usually have a gallery for local artists. You could also ask restaurants to put your stuff up on their walls with your business card and price tag.

Try www.flickr.com it's free, but you have to upload more photos than paintings, because it's mainly a photo site.
