It depends what kind of artist you are, if you freelance or are employed by a company, and weather or not you are selling any work or not. Some artists make next to nothing while others become millionaires. I used to have a yearly salary of about $10,000. when I drew electronic parts for a wholesale catalog.

Did you ever hear the phrase "starving artist"? It's self explanatory.
Think about American Idol, Well there are just as many 'artists' out there too.
Try to show your work..... But don't quit your day job just yet.

Artists get paid on commission, not salary. Well, unless your day job is salaried, I guess.....
I think your average (not counting non-art related income) would be somewhere around poverty level.

I work full time and never have a holiday .. no car etc its a mugs game don't even begin to think one can make a living and i am a fairly competent portrait artist

It really depends on the artist! Some do well, some don't.

most people who are artists (aside from the more well known ones) have another job to fund their artwork, and anyway most people who become artists don't do it to make money, they do art because thats what they love.

It all depends on what you do. most artist become rich after they die, sucks dont it.
