If you do not understand the Bible you cannot interpret it.
Many say they do and make up something to justify their thought process.
You must have the Holy Spirit within you to be able to interpret and understand what the Bible is saying.
If someone calls it stupid or think they have found a discrepancy, have no knowledge or understanding of the Bible.
Some just like to pick to think they are superior in intellect or just to irritate for lack of entertainment.

The thing with Christianity is you cannot interpret anything if you are not in the blood of Christ. from a non believer it will look contradictory and they will state theories about the bible that have been misunderstood whereas a Christian will know exactly what God's message is. Just as Christians may not be able to understand the Quran. However, you have some ignorant atheists that are just evil and want to degrade God and anything else and will find anything as proof that he doesn’t exist. Those are the kinds that I ignore. True atheists do not throw insults and give interesting theory relating to the bible in efforts to either understand or disagree with its meaning.

Its just as Mortimer said, the Christians hold some distorted views on things. Now don't get me wrong, I do like the way some of the Christians focus on helping the poor, but the religious right has gotten an idiot of a president elected twice because of his "values" that don't include protecting the environment or honesty about why we sent our troops to die, and are also behind things like the obviously failing "abstainence only education" totally sidesteps giving our children sexual education while they get pregnant and diseased.
So what do we do? Try to shed some light on some of faulty beliefs that you have so that you might actually think critically and see that maybe your preist doesn't know what he's talking about and maybe you should start asking questions. Actual questions that challenge the beliefs you hold. The questions that you have but won't allow yourself to ask. Like "Why would such a loving God even have the concept of hell?" If you ask a question like that, it might lead you to ask more questions and think more for yourself rather than just blindly acception whatever is told to you every Sunday. It would make the country a better place I think.

That is a good question. Judging from the questions that non-Christians ask on Yahoo! Answer, they obviously do not do a very good job of interpreting it, regardless of their reasons. That said, I know an awful lot of Christians who do not do much better. People have their agenda, and they attempt to manipulate the Bible to fit that agenda. People do the same thing with the Constitution, Bill of Rights, Koran, and just about every other significant piece of religious or political writing. So in answer to your question, some are trying to understand it... but most of them are just looking for cannon fodder to try to put you down. In their attempts to fight the "intolerant fundamental Christian," they become intolerant themselves. If you study your Bible carefully, however, you should have no problem refuting their arguments.

While I am not a "believer", I'm working on a master's degree in folklore and mythology. A large part of this concerns religions and interpreting *many* religious texts, including the Bible. Since I've chosen to focus on American mythology, the Bible is the main holy text I use.

Because some followers of the Bible - not all, but some - are earnestly trying to pass laws based on Biblical texts that will affect the rest of us. At least in the U.S. It's easier to battle something that you have a firm understanding of than something you're vague on.

We interpret on for the benefit of those who DO believe it, who have been given twisted interpretations that impact us and the world in which we live. You would do the same if you were in our position.
What would you say to a Muslim who questioned your bothering to interpret their Qu'ran, when you felt yiour interpretation of a key passage was better than theirs?

I dont have a problem with anyone trying to interperet the bible. I do have a problem with people who interperet it in order to fit their agenda, and then project their convenient interperetation on myself or others.
I havent seen much actual 'critical thinking' from those saying that a person who believes doesnt know how to . I keep seeing all these 'slogans' that are becoming soooo cliche, like 'critical thinking' and 'flying spaghetti monster'. Will anyone think critically enough to see that thats not being clever, its being a follower, not a leader?

Those who do not believe in the bible aren't saved by God's grace and so, some unbelievers would go so far as to say they either don't believe in it or they'll say it's stupid, a fairy tale, etc. Those who can't interpret it, they are without understanding or knowledge. 2 Corinthians 4:3 says, "But if the gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost".
