I've had this cat since he was a kitten, he was never very friendly, but now he wants nothing to do with me or anyone else, and just sleeps and eats (a lot!) I've tried befriending him but he just doesn't like me. I'd like to get rid of him, but who would want a grumpy 7 year old cat? The humane society has a long waiting list. Should I bring him to a farm as a barn cat? Does anyone have any idea's about making him nicer? Any insights are appreciated!

If he is not friendly with you... it is most likely that you were not friendly with him to start with.
If he has been outside most of the time... he could have become slightly wild.

Cats are very different to dogs and very independant. A cat only does what he wants to do... not what you want him to do.

When a cat comes to you... you have to take notice and welcome him. If you don't and tell him to go away... he won't come anymore.
You cannot grab a cat and put him on your lap. He will jump off straight away. You have to wait for the cat to jump on your lap. But if you have not allowed him to do that in the past... he will remember. Cats have fabulous memories.

I have a 7 year old cat and I am talking from experience.

Try patting him as often as you can and see if he purr when you do. Scratch the top of his head and around his neck. Stay next to him while he eats. They like that.

Please don't take your 7 year old cat to the humane society. He will surely die broken hearted there. Even if he's not very friendly he certainly wouldn't know what to do if you or your family just dumped him out on a farm after all these years. You cat is old now. Just offer some petting and soothing vocal tones, especially when you feed him. Also, he may not be getting what he needs from his cat food. I had a cat like that but had to feed my other cat different cat food after a urinary tract infection. Within 2 months the other older cat was alert, trimming down and seems to be a happy cat now. I used Friskey's, recommended by a vet. Give it a try and take your cat to the vet for a check up. Don't give up on him. If he truly didni't like you he would have left you years ago.

Do you have other pets as well? I know with my cat he was the same way. But as soon as I got another cat he began to be a lot more friendlier to me because I think he was a bit jealous and didn't want me to give the other cat affection. Now, he was never mean to the other cat but didn't like her either. Honestly, once cats have that anti whatever personality, it is close to impossible to break them of it. When I got the "other cat", Tommy (the anti social) was only 3 years old. He is 7 years old now. Good luck!

No. You adopted this cat, now you want to "get rid of him". You are responsible for him. If you feel not able of developing a relationship with this cat and develop some love for her, find an animal trainer who can help you. If you really feel that this is too much for you, find a new owner who is more responsible. Dropping him as a farm cat should be out of the question. You owe it to your cat.

My cat was labeled as antisocial when I adopted her. She is anything but. Is your cat being destructive? Does he leave his calling card everywhere? If he's not doing these things then don't get rid of him. Many cats are antisocial. Just provide him with a good home, food (but don't overfeed him), make sure he's cared for and don't worry about him being antisocial. Do you have toys about or anything else to keep him active?

If he is like that and is 7 years then he wasnt probably given enough attention growing up and now he is very independent. You have to be friends with him by stablishing a routine of petting and playing, at least have him lay next to you at first. Even if you get bored or he doesnt pay attention. If he senses you wont keep being nice to him then he will ignore you, cats are very sensitive when it comes to caring. If you dont pay attention to him he wont pay attention to you. Getting rid of him is like triyng to get rid of a family member because you dont like him, it is just something you dont do.

its too late to change your cat. you raised him to be that way. now, just leave him be the grumpy cat. would you like if someone felt that way about you? how would you like to live in a barn.

Why not let him be? In adopting this kitten you made a lifetime commitment to its care - social or not. Have a heart, and take some responsibility for your animal.
