I am a mom who smoked for 25 years, my daughter hated it also, but the truth is this, you can ask your mom to quit but until she is ready she can try a hundred times and it won't matter, she has to be the one that want to quit for herself, all you can do is let her know if she wants to try that you will be there for her, it is very very hard to give up the habit and sometimes people just can seem to do it, I have been smoke free for over a year now and it is still very hard to not want to smoke, it is an addiction, so just be patient and tell her how much it would mean to you and maybe she will come around.

You can't stop someone from doing anything, you should understand that people have to help themselves, i smoked for over 30 years, whatever anyone said to me about smoking i said my life i will do what i want i am grown, until last year when my left lung collapsed 2 times, the first time the emergency room Dr had to do emergency surgery and put a chest tube in my left side the pain was so bad i just wanted to die, the Dr's told me it was from smoking i figured that i was gonna die anyway so after i got out of the hospital,i started to smoke again i was in the hospital about 4 days.5 weeks after i got home it collasped again i had to have another chest tube put in and had to have my lung operated on,that was enough for me i quit after being in the hospital for almost 2 weeks with a chest tube in me hooked up to a vaccuum i quit, its been over a year since i quit and i feel great now,i can breath better now then i did when i smoked.

Discuss this with her ONCE and then leave it alone.
Tell her that you understand that she likes to smoke, or maybe she has to smoke, but for her health and because you care about her, you are asking her if she will promise to quit smoking when you become pregnant with her first grandchild. You want her to be there for her grandchild as a healthy grandma for many years, and you want her grandchild to breathe healthy air.
Probably your mom wants to quit. This would give her at least a few years to plan for it, and an excellent motivation to quit. Most people have a MUCH easier time quitting if they can plan way in advance for a specific time to quit smoking.

Smoking is such a hard habit to break. For some people, including my Mom, your Mom and even my husband- the one and only way is for the government to ban smoking and make it illegal. They really should too, because for smokers, it is just too addicting to quit.

there's not that much you can do.
she's addicted. see if she will go to a doctor
or get the patch or do a smoking cessation program.
if you get rid of her cigarettes she will just buy more.
you have to help her change her mind.
she has to decide to quit.
so have quiet talks about it.
ask her about it and listen to her
i mean really listen, don't just tell her to quit.
listen to her talk about why she smokes and why she needs it
and whether she wants to quit or not.
have serious talks with her.
ask her
"mom why do you smoke"
"mom, when did you start"
"mom, how expensive is it?"
"mom, do you wish you could quit?"
"mom, how does it make you feel when you don't smoke?"
"how does it make you feel when you smoke?"
"why do you need cigarettes?"
"have you ever tried to quit? what happened?"
"why is it hard to quit smoking?"
"are you scared about the health affects?"
"what does smoking mean to you?"
"how does it make your life better?"
and stuff like that. just really really listen to her.
if she is going to quit she has to make her own decision.
you cannot make her. you cannot make the deicsion for her.
there are lots of programs.

Sadly you can not get someone to do something. Only suggest and hope they follow through. I would say though ...plan a day together...lots of no smoking places...let her see what she misses out on by smoking...

My mom couldn't stop either. Untill her stroke...once the 53 year old woman had to relearn how to talk she had a much easier time of it. Threw em away for good.
