My sister inlaw and husband just became Jehova witnesses. They went out and bought christmas presents for their grand children. Now what kind of Jehova witness is that when they are not supposte to celebrate anything, and I mean nothing is celebrated. Is that what they call a Jack Jehova witness? Like they call the Mormans Jack Mormans if they do not follow the teachings of the church.

first of all, it's JEHOVAH. Jehovah's Witnesses come from all aspects of society, and old habits are sometimes hard to break. If one is new to the truth, it can be difficult to not give in to the things the world offers that look so innocent. They will surely be censured by an elder if they are baptised Witnesses. If they are NOT baptised, then there is a difference.. they are not considered an actual Witness yet. And even for years old, baptised Witnesses, we are still human, with human mistakes. Let's hope that next year they can have more faith that Jehovah's way is the correct one! :)
BTW, HannahJ is correct... there are plenty of things Witnesses celebrate- they just aren't associated with worldly holidays and such. We celebrate births (not birthdays), weddings, anniversaries, graduations, and in our home, we have snow day parties, or balloon day parties, where we set a day aside, buy or make gifts, invite our friends over to share in the fun, and we give gifts for no reason whatsoever except that we love one another!

There are valid reasons that the Jehovah's Witnesses consider Christmas a pagan celebration. A great deal of the customs are in fact from similar wintertime non Christian festivities. Though these may be true celebrating the Word made flesh is not wrong. It is better to not get caught up in the debate without knowledge. So you are asking a real good question. Jesus was born in the last week of September. This can be shown biblically. Many people of the Judaic faith do not think of a person's life from the first breath at birth but consider a person as becoming a living soul at conception. If Jesus was born in the last week of September based on time of conception what was the week of the year Jesus was conceived? Is it an error to celebrate the greatest gift God Almighty has given man the very birth of this gift? No, of course not.

When Jehovah's Witnesses say they don't celebrate x-mas, they do not decorate their homes, put up a x-mas tree, put presents under the tree, sing x-mas songs and open presents on x-mas eve or x-mas day.

Buying someone a present and giving it to them in December is not celebrating x-mas. Giving gifts is something witnesses do all year round, for no reason. If you happen to find something for someone in December, then they may get it in December, but not on the 25th, wrapped in x-mas paper, with a x-mas card, under a tree, by Santa Clause. The receiver of the gift would know it is not a x-mas gift.

With that said, someone studying with Jehovah's Witnesses are not Jehovah's Witnesses yet, so they may still celebrate holidays. Someone is not consider a Witnesses until they are baptized. Some may have been a witness in the past and are not active and have returned to doing things they had left behind. If someone is baptized and giving x-mas gifts, then that is serious.

The bottom line is don't assume that if a Jehovah's Witness buys a present in December, that it is for a x-mas gift. I can guarantee that 99.9% of the time that it has nothing to do with x-mas.

Well, first the name is Jehovah's Witnesses. It is singular plural. Like MissySue's keys. Not MissySue keys. They are witnesses of Jehovah, therefore they are Jehovah's Witnesses.

Also there is no such thing as a Jack Jehovah witness. I'm not sure how seriously to take your post but either they are not Jehovah's Witnesses at all or the presents they bought are not Christmas presents. If I may ask, did they dedicate their lives to Jehovah and make that dedication public by public baptism? Did they get baptized as witnesses? Did you ask them why they bought Christmas presents? Did they give you a satisfying response? Will you share the response with us?

Also, you should be aware that Jehovah's Witnesses do celebrate things. There is nothing in their doctrines which mandate that they celebrate nothing . . . "and I mean nothing" as you say.

When you say became Jehova witnesses (sic)...did you mean baptized? Cause if they are I dont think that they wil still participate in gift giving during Christmas.

But if they are studying only and has not dedicated themselves to God through baptism, they are not yet to be called Jehovah's witnesses.

To Dfirefox, dont know what you mean about the money, we do not go around asking for money, nor thithes...

Jehovah's Witnesses are Christians; they do not celebrate "Christmas", largely because "Christmas" does not celebrate Christ.

Individuals among Jehovah's Witnesses decide for themselves whether, to whom, and on what date they will give gifts. That date *MAY* include December 25, but rarely does because most Jehovah's Witnesses are careful to avoid what may seem to be a celebration of Christendom's so-called "Christmas".

Some Jehovah's Witnesses assume that their families and friends understand the matter, but questions such as this clarify that it is wise when individuals among Jehovah's Witnesses choose to avoid the possibility of confusion by completely avoiding the practice of gift-giving during this season.

Whats a "Jack Jehovah Witness"? lol

I grew up with a friend who had a dad who was married to a witness mom...alot of the time, tradition just got put in place first. Like someone said, its a hard habit to break buying stuff for your kids and stuff...they probably did everything on the down low...but if they get caught, then yes, their pretty much screwed.

slickcut, we dont celebrate jehovah's death.. (he is still alive)missysue I think that the best answer you can get is if you ask that person. perhaps it wasnt a christmas gift.. it was just a gift and since its that time of the year it was misinterpreted. Althought i do not celebrate christmas and neither does my friend she got me this nice ring she saw on sale on Dec 15. It was not a christmas gift she gave it to me becaus she saw it was cute and it would match the shirt i had already. you see i find it more loving for some one to give me a gift because they thought about me as they went shopping instead of someone giving me a gift becahse the HAVE TO, because its that time of the year. Jehovah's witnesses celebrate ALOT of things.. we had alot of fun, dancing and eating at my sister in-laws babyshower. :o) serving jehovah is not burdensom at all.... so the rules that he has given to us i follow out of love and fear and not because I HAVE To..

Maybe they are in the same situation as I am. I converted to Judaism after my children were older. They are still Christians. I am invited to their Christmas family gatherings, and I do buy Gifts for their family. I am not celebrating Christmas, but am respecting their family traditions.

I don,t know why they do that when they are not suppose to,but they do...My husband had 2 aunts that were Jehova,s witnesses, and one had a small son, anyway we were there at their house one day near christmas, and I did,t know so I ask her what her son wanted for Christmas, and she said we don,t celebrate Christmas we are jehova,s witness and we don,t believe in christmas,we celebrate Jehova,s death, she left me with my mouth open....anyway,she went on to add this (but i bought my sona bike so he would not feel left out) and I thought huh? and i did not understand it then and still don,t.They are not sticking to what they suppose to believe....So we have a little joke in our family,if we are broke at christmas,we just say on we are jehova,s witness.....ha ha...but we arent really!
