My Mother and I are hoping to lose weight in the year to come, but we are unsure on what exactly it is we needs to do and how much of it we need, so if anyone knows of any great diet or workout let me know!
We also are unsure on if we need to see a workout trainer at a gym because I have a fitness center where I live but I'm not sure if it's easier to workout at my place or go to a public gym. HELP!!!!

A trainer would be good because unless you are highly motived all that exercise equipment you go out and buy is going to be nothing but expensive clothes racks.
And that fad diet is going to be supplemented with quick turn-in's to McDonald's, Burger King's, and Taco Bell's because you will feel like you are starving to death all the time.
A professional trainer can help you set the exercise level and amount of exercise to start with and then monitor your progress and adjust your exercisie and diet as you progress.
A professional trainer will also prevent you from making the two common mistakes most people make when they start trying to lose weight and get in shape.
Those are:
They starve themselves to lose the weight fast. NOT GOOD! you will only gain it back and more!
they over do it when starting to exercise again NOT GOOD! Starting out too fast you run the risk of tearing muscles, tearing ligaments, tearing up knees and ankles. even breaking bones, not to mention over stressing you heart causing heart attacks.

People make Millions every year selling these fad diets and exercise programs that only work on a temporary basis. And in some cases do more damage than good to a person's body.

In any case you will have to build up muscle mass to replace the flab! Other wise you will just gain it back again.
Also you can't starve yourself. Feeling always hungry will just make you eat more when you get off your diet.
Substitute fresh fruits like Apples, Oranges, Plums, Grapes, Peaches, Tangerines, etc for between meal snacks when you get hungry, and desserts. They taste better and are better for you. They are also high in fiber.
Don't skip meals by depending on those liquid diet drinks to replace it. Eat a balanced meal especially in the morning at breakfast. Then again at lunch, then again at supper. Just eat a little less, and lay off the mashed potatos and gravy; in between meals eat fresh fruit when you start feeling hungry.
The results might not be as fast, but they will be lasting.
Again it is best to get a profession trainer to work with you when you are just starting out. And a combination of strength training and cardo exercise is best. Cardo like running, walking, alone won't do it.
Just keep in mind that there are going to be weeks when you don't lose any weight because the fat is being replaced with muscle mass, and muscle is heavier than fat. And that is what youi want for long term success.

GOOD LUCK AND DO NOT GET INTO TOO BIG A HURRY! Remember you did not put the weight on over night and you are not going to get it off over night.

Doing some type of cardio-activity everyday is desired. Where you workout is dependant upon your schedules. don't pay a trainer or a gym membership if you don't have to.

The second thing is a healthy lifestyle. If you are going to continue eating unhealthy, working out is not going to help.

I suggest walking(jogging) everyday (non-negoitiable) and then adding some type of aerobic workout. I love kickboxing.

I lost 45 lbs in 2 months by walking in my neighborhood everyday...and doing kickboxing 3 times a week. I started with a kick boxing video at first. I also changed the way I eat. No sweets or fried foods...and I made sure to eat 6 small portions everyday....small being the key word. drink lots of water....especially a glass before you eat. you will fill full faster.

and if you want to weight train....see a trainer!!!!

Check out the Body for Life website. It's a 12 week program that incorporates proper eating and exercise. I'm in week 11 and have had great results. I hit the gym 3 times a week and do cardio for 20 minutes every other day.

I'd say every other day would be fine. Cardio for 30 minutes would be good. I would recommend getting a trainer if you plan on hitting the weights which would be good if you want to tone up.
The reason you want to get a trainer is because if you do exercises improperly, you may screw yourself up more than you thought you would.
Also, check out Women's Health magazine. I'd recommend that for women.
