yes they charge the merchants more than visa and mc

Some of the bigger corporations realize that since they are paying money to accept credit cards in the first place that they are more likely to go with the most commonly used cards i.e. visa/mastercard. These merchants would lose money if not enough customers decided to use Discover if the merchant chose to accept it.

Rates vary to the stores, but, most limit the number of types of CC they accept just due to the hassell of it.
Remember thou, you pay cash, you dont pay extra.
