Advice for New Years Eve on Times Square:
The most recent issue of New York Magazine had a good article on New Years Eve in New York.

First thing PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL & I suggest no drinking - it's just 4 girls out in a town they are not familiar w/.
I suggest taking the ferry from port imperial, weehawken in nj to midtown. It takes less than 10mins to get across. Once you arrive in midtown there are free shuttle buses available to take you into the city. The ferry will run on sunday every 20mins from 8am - 2am but the shuttle bus will only run until 9pm. So you will need to catch a cab back to the pier. (please do not take any of those livery taxis - private ones) could be dangerous.
Times Square will be VERY crowded so regardless of what time you arrive, there will already be a crowd. Just make sure you girls don't get separated - it can easily happen! Just make sure you have a working cel phone!
I think the ferry is the safest & easiest way to and from NYC that night! Have fun, be safe, and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

alcohol is not allowed. The police will be checking bags (for security reasons), so it is advised not to bring any big bags with you. Also, if you have to take a bathroom break, pray to God there are portal potties because once you leave the Times Square area after they shut off the traffic you would not be allowed back. And the main thing is to get there very early. People start going to Times Square on New Years eve around 6am.
Have fun, stay safe and say Hello to Ryan Seacrest and Dick Clark for me. HAPPY NEW YEAR

For a good spot, get there before 8 PM, Be ready for no bathroom, no food or drink or sitting till 1 AM. Have your exit planned in advance (IE have your metro card paid for). watch out for the security check-points.
Be ready for the cold and all other things that mother nature can send your way.
Don't drink booze on the street, its illigal and will lower your tolerance for the cold.
Don't even think of driving into the Metro Area that night.
PS. Have fun

Drinking? There are no bathrooms available and you will be standing in the same spot for hours. My advice is not only to not drink alcohol, but to DRINK NOTHING - no water, no soda and certainly no beer. Keep your valuables inside your jacket and bring as little as possible - leave your good jewelry home - wear a $5 watch. BE AWARE OF THE PICKPOCKETS - they are out in full force on New Year's Eve. Oh, and very important - wear your MOST COMFORTABLE SHOES - you will be standing on hard pavement for hours and hours.
