I recently have noticed many people in their late teens(18-19) and early 20's feel it is absolutely necessary to live with their bf/gf just because they think it's the thing to do in to pop-culture. They also feel they need to spend the night, or many nights with them because of pop-culture as well. It seems alot of this ideology is pushed upon them current TV shows like Howard Stern, Road Rules, The O.C., and basically anything that's on MTV or VH1.

Do you, or did you feel your values were impressed upon you by TV shows or by your parents? If you answered by TV shows, how did you feel when you found out that's not the right way to go, and lastly, what will you do when YOUR kids follow this same ideology or whatever is prominant at the time they're in this age group?

Mommy - I disagree. Living together is NOT the only way to get to know someone. Did your parents & Grandparents do it? I think not.

I agree with u Jim.....many teenagers don't realize that 20's is the time when they can make a move on their career. Instead, they feel like getting gf and moving on with them simply coz the influence of TV and their friends. Majoirty of my friends were same in college, they started college same time as I did and they ended up having makeup/breakup relationship with their gf/bf in their 20s. Today after 5 years, majority of them are dropped out of school, divorced, have kids and work 80 hours a week on hourly wages.
I think that parents needs to be more strick on their kids about their gf/bf and specially they need to educate them on safe sex lessons. There are many few kids out their in college who actually have goal to be rich and do something in their lifes other than fooling around with their gf, which won't get them no where other than a kid before marriage.

everyone formulates their values based off their life expierences. whether you get it drilled into you by your folks or getting it from the tube, it's all apart of living and learning. what pisses me off about rants like your's is that you take away all possibility that the person watching the tv has any ability to filter the information being shown and sort through the bad and the good. you can't assmue that someone is narrowminded and a "slave to the media" based on the programs they watch. i'm not denying that it may be true in some cases but don't be as narrowminded as the people you're trying to attack and open up your question a little. If two people want to live with each other I doubt their inspiration would come from the tv, think about what you're saying before you talk and make a fool out of yourself.

I dont feel that its neccesary to live with your mate. Now a days (in America) its just accepted so people do it more. I think people would get married at this age, but do to our economy, we can't because, you just can't be fresh out of High School and support your self with a 7 bucks an hour type of job. So people dont want to get married until they are financially stable. My mother and father were married by 20. Thats because back then, people were able to support themselves. I think that at 20 people are ready to move in, but money is the issue. As for MtV and VH1, when do they show people living together as partners? All I ever see on MtV and Vh1 is flavor flav, the real world, beauty and the geek and show that get canceled before you can see them.

Living with someone and /or spending the night is a practical thing to do. People have matured over the years. If it were my child I would want her to get to know someone as much as possible before marriage. The only way you can do that is by living with them. TV shows have not affected it, I think they have adjusted to people and there lives now. I am glad not everything is brady bunch anymore

so what exactly was wrong with moving in with your boyfriend/girlfriend in your early twenties? my parents were in their early twenties when they got married and moved in together. That was 20 years ago!

Do you expect people to wait until they are thirty-something until they move in together or even spend a night with each other?
I'm just not sure what you're trying to get at.
