times square for new years 'o7?

Question

i have never been to the city, but i was talking to a friend of mine and we want to get our friends together to watch the ball drop in times square. we live in NJ near the shore.

what kind of things should we expect? what should we wear? what should we be prepared for? when should we arrive? what time can i expect to get back home by riding subway and train? is there a way maybe to get indoors to like MTV or something?

any tips or trick are helpful! happy new years!

alcohol is not allowed. The police will be checking bags (for security reasons), so it is advised not to bring any big bags with you. Also, if you have to take a bathroom break, pray to God there are portal potties because once you leave the Times Square area after they shut off the traffic you would not be allowed back. And the main thing is to get there very early. People start going to Times Square on New Years eve around 6am.

Weather in NY, as you know in NJ, has been warm, so dress as you will do in NJ. Also wear comfortable shoes and clothes. If you want something indoors, you can try to get a room in the Marriot on Times Square (its right across the street from Planet Hollywood) or go to Planet Hollywood on 45th and Broadway. You should be prepared (besides the police checking your bags) for large crowds, pickpockets, a lot of police presence.

Drinking? There are no bathrooms available and you will be standing in the same spot for hours. My advice is not only to not drink alcohol, but to DRINK NOTHING - no water, no soda and certainly no beer. Keep your valuables inside your jacket and bring as little as possible - leave your good jewelry home - wear a $5 watch. BE AWARE OF THE PICKPOCKETS - they are out in full force on New Year's Eve. Oh, and very important - wear your MOST COMFORTABLE SHOES - you will be standing on hard pavement for hours and hours.
